With a reputation for excellence in underground utilities, water/wastewater treatment, and complex public infrastructure, they are seeking a seasoned legal professional to join their executive team and help mitigate risk, support growth, and provide proactive legal strategy.
About the Position:
The General Counsel will serve as the company’s chief legal advisor, responsible for all legal affairs including contract negotiation and review, claims and dispute resolution, compliance, risk management, and insurance matters. This role will be instrumental in shaping internal policy, protecting the company’s interests, and partnering with executive leadership to support operations and strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as principal legal advisor on all major business transactions, including construction contracts (DBB, CMAR, CMGC), subcontracts, joint ventures, and vendor agreements
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with public agencies, subcontractors, consultants, and suppliers
- Oversee dispute resolution and claims management, including preparation and negotiation of claims and support for litigation and arbitration
- Manage outside counsel and coordinate legal strategy related to construction disputes, contract enforcement, bid protests, bonding issues, and labor matters
- Advise on insurance policies, risk allocation, indemnification, and claim recovery processes
- Monitor and ensure compliance with state and federal laws, public works requirements, union labor agreements, and safety regulations
- Collaborate with project teams to evaluate contract risks, develop mitigation strategies, and provide real-time support on jobsite legal issues
- Provide guidance on corporate governance, entity management, and internal policies as needed
Preferred Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) and active license with the California Bar (in good standing)
- Minimum 10 years of legal experience, with significant focus in construction law and/or public infrastructure projects
- Prior in-house counsel or legal leadership experience at a general contractor or construction-focused firm
- Strong knowledge of California public contracting law, claims and disputes, labor compliance, and construction risk management
- Practical experience with alternative delivery methods (Design-Build, CMAR, CMGC) and public agency contract formats
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise both field and executive-level staff
- Familiarity with insurance and bonding for construction, including general liability, builder’s risk, and surety claims
